In the dark ages, the additive packages used in engine oils did not mix well with synthetic base stocks. They did, however, mix with petroleum base stocks, and that would mix with the synthetic. Thus, the label "synthetic,exclusive of additive package".
Far as I know, that problem has been solved by at least AMSOIL and Mobil 1, probably by some of the others, too.
