The Check Engine light went on today for the first time, and I thought maybe folks here could give me some advice before I take it in to the shop. It's a '99 9-3 S convertible with an automatic transmission and about 63K miles. Just had it in for the 60K service at Scanwest Autosport in Seattle in October. Aside from the Check Engine light, here are some other symptoms that I've noticed (some new, some old):
* Since soon after I bought the car (at 30K miles three years ago), it's been slow to start -- takes a few cranks to start up, particularly on a cold start
* For a while now, there's been a mild metallic rattling sound on a cold start when idling. Goes away when I rev the engine
* Lately when I start it cold, it seems to rev really high -- over 2000 RPM -- before settling down to about 1000
* Most troublesome: Once this winter when it was cold out (about 30 degrees), I started the car, waited for it to settle down to 1000 RPM, and shifted into reverse to back out of my driveway. The engine made an awful clunking noise for a few seconds until I shut it off. When I started it up again, it was okay. Another time this winter, again on a cold day, when I shifted into reverse the engine just died. Again I started it up again and it was okay. These are the only two instances of this.
* When I get out of the car now, I notice an oil/gas smell. This is new -- previously, there was either no smell or the rotten egg smell that others have reported
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Anything that I can try on my own before taking it in for service? Thanks a lot for any help!
