A lot of us DIY most of the work on our cars. Follow along on this bb, and you'll be able to get a lot of pointers.

No one can guarantee 300k, but some of these engines have been known to go 600k+. The Viggen is asking a lot from its engine, though, so it may not have the life expectancy of a lower-output version of the same engine.

Head gaskets seem to be ok as long as the headbolts are torqued correctly. This was a problem on 900s and 9-3s from the late 90s to '01 or so...not sure if it applies to the Viggen. As long as there's no leakage through the gasket yet, re-torquing the bolts seems to fix the problem.

The biggest problems in mid- to late-'90s Saabs seem to have been with the V6 engines, so that doesn't apply to the Viggen. With proper care, it should be a reliable car.

There are performance upgrades. I think most people start with the suspension; the Viggen has arguably more power than the suspension can handle in stock form. The consensus is that Saab underrated the engine when they called it a 230 hp; dyno tests seem to show closer to 250, which is what Saab rates the 9-5 Aero with the same engine. And gobs of torque down low. For upgrades, to start with, look at mpperformance.com, genuinesaab.com, and abbottracing.com. There are others, too.
