As a salesman you never get customers who haven't spent any money on their old cars to consider a trade.
However it's a common behavior that as soon as the car requires some money it triggers the "better trade it in quick" response.
That is if a customer tells me they've just spent some dough on their trade, then they are indeed ready to trade it. So it's almost a knee jerk reaction, spend money on old car so get rid of it before you have to spend some more.
I agree with JohnnyF. At only 101k there's not any serious mechanical wear present and the cosmetics should be holding up well too. Sure you're always gonna' have unexpected expenses with a 100k mile car, that's the territory for not having a car payment. It should stay fixed.
You mention struts, water pump, and thermostat, normal wear items on any car. I've got a few pixels out on my SID in my 1995, but it's still very readable. A throttle body is just one of those things. You should be fine for quite awhile, but if it costs you any more you'll have the same feelings all over again. It's a very normal pattern.
