You can do anything you feel comfortable with. I ALWAYS use factory filters (air, fuel, oil) on vehicles and use good, factory approved oil. I have seen warranties voided for incorrect filters that caused engine damage (piston cooling nozzle in 5.9 cummins diesel) so take that angle away by always using factory filters.
Other than that, the dealer does not have to do the work. Everyone mentions the Mass Mognassun act (spelling?) that says your failure must be a results of your modification or neglegence. so if you did an oil change incorrectly and used the wrong filter or oil and the transmission lost a seal, you should still be covered. But remember, the company has more money than you for legal fees so if you are in the gray area, they will win.
don't be afraid to turn your own wrenches. its easy and saves a good deal of money.
