What I've seen here in Salt Central

...aka, Eastern Massachusetts: Most rust seems to form on that hatch lip, as Dean said, and is especially vulnerable if the paint is chipped. (I'd touch up these areas every fall) In looking for a used Saab recently, I've seen dozens of salt-afflicted ones that are developing a slow rot along the trailing edge of the wheel wells. I've only seen one really bad case of imminent body rot, bubbling paint on a 94 900 that was definitely poorly cared for.
Few of the cars I've seen showed moderate or major underbody rust. In some cases, the muffler hangers and bumper mounts were obviously corroded. I saw a couple of cars with tiny pits starting to form on the bottom of the doors. (This might be another touchup issue.)
Based on this admittedly anecdotal evidence, I'd say that frequent car washes in winter and diligent paint touchups in other seasons should help a lot.
