You can fish through the drain hole to look for crud. Or remove the valve cover and look there while re-torquing the head bolts. If all is well, safe to switch. If heavy sludge, synthetic will loosen it and you know what can happen. If you use a flush, same thing. The offically accknowledged problem by Saab covers 1998 - 2001 up to and including VIN 13055567. So you are in the era of bad head bolts. So the re-torque is really something that you should not ignore. So if the valve cover comes off anyways, you can have a very good look at the inside. Something that I would want to see (and do) myself. Might be good to examine the exterior head gasket seam too for signs of distress.
