I can't believe this line of thinking. I guess I was the only one to watch the recent cable show on Race Car Tech.
NASCAR and NHRA cars were covered in detail. F1- I don't remember if that was there or not. But the basic gist is that these cars cost millions. The engines are always run in near perfect conditions. They're always re-engineered, rebuilt and tuned to perfection. Your average production car can't dream of this. The components are much cheaper, they're engineered only once or twice before hitting the street. They keep running even if one cylinder is a bit lean. Once the car is in production, you can't change the design or go back to every customer and replace his pistions or change the camshaft.

We know the Viggen engine has weaknesses, like every production engine. In my opinion, the knock sensor system is junk. They should have at least added a conventional one for those conditions where the spark gap measurement is not reliable. Like redline at WOT with spark plugs that are slightly worn. I've melted pistons that way. I also think that is why the Viggen engine can have cracked pistions.

Many modern cars aren't over-engineered as much as older vehicles. Cast iron blocks, heads, exhaust manifolds, pistons are out. Take an old chevy 350 from the 70s and you'd be hard pressed to melt a piston. I drove one that knocked so loud you got a headache. Didn't hurt it at all (work van, drove for two years that way). Viggen motor? 2 seconds and you are toast.

Back to redlining. For all those who haven't redlined much, don't start now. You'll ruin the rings when they hit the lip at the top of the cylinder wall when the connecting rods stretch. Since I bought my Viggen used with 30k, I don't go past 5500RPM except by accident...
