Absence of oil light flicker does not guarantee a clean engine.
I suspected valves or lifters on my car when noise first developed. This was partly correct, and cleared up after a couple cans of a product by Lubro-Moly called "Ventil-Sauber" (valve-clean, in German). Unfortunately, when that noise went away, I could clearly hear what turned out to be chain noise.
Later on, as part of my 100k maintenance I had the oil pressure tested, and found it to be ok (50psi at 2000 rpm). Then I removed and measured the timing chain tensioner. It was extended past the limit, which explained the chain noise. Following that, I had the oil pan removed and cleaned, and found the oil screen about 80% plugged, and damage to rod bearings.
So, good oil pressure alone does not guarantee a healthy engine. Most of what I found has been described here at one time or another, most often by Anders/Swedecar.
