Weird idle behavior -

My 9-3 apparently has a bad alternator (see post below). I had to drive it just now and when the A/C compressor kicked on, the idle jumped from the normal 990 or so to about 1500. When the compressor turns off, the idle drops to normal again. Is is because the compressor is drawing amps and since the alternator is bad, the engine is made to idle higher to compensate? Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.
