I assume the Saab indy checked the plugs for right type and gap?
Yes it is quite likely that you have a DI going bad.
Yes it could damage the catalytic converter on your car if it misfires too much.
Yes you could replace the DI cassette and spark plugs yourself but it is also a new software download for your cars computer that should be done at the same time.
Part of the software is to prolong the life of the new DI (so they say at least) but we will not know that until years from now and if it is many cars that gets a new DI without the software down load it will take even longer before any reliable results start to show up.
Search for DI, DIC or on this and the 9-5 board and you will get more information than you care to read.
