I'm following up my original post from last month. When I took it into the dealer at that time, they changed the power steering pump. Since the noise was only occasional, I did not hear it for a few days.
I made another appointment for yesterday. They changed the idler pulley. When I got in it this morning to drive away, there was the sound. I dragged out a mechanic, who suggested that we change the water pump. They'll call when the part is in.
I suspect that the original owner didn't take care of it. I saw the post from March suggesting the oil pump can get clogged, so I printed it out and will insist that they change that as well.
Any thoughts or recommendations? Should I find a different dealer to service the car? It is still under the precertified warranty.
I am concerned that I've got a lemon.
Thank you!

Hello -
We bought a 2000 9-3 just over a year ago, precertified from a dealer. I'm having an intermittent problem when I start the car - maybe once or twice a week, when the engine is cold (first thing in the morning or when it's been sitting all day at work). A high pitched hum comes from the passenger side of the engine, perhaps near the belt (is that a serpentine belt?). It persists for a minute or two, changing in pitch, then is gone. The car otherwise is performing well.
I have an appointment with a mechanic on Monday, but would welcome any thoughts you have. (Our '99 Passat Wagon recently had serpentine belt troubles, so I'm concerned.)
Thanks so much!
