Overtorqued lugnuts are a way of life when you let poorly paid people work on your beloved car. I was having a flat on the wife's car repaired at the local tire superstore recently when I was watching the "specialist" remount the patched tire. He used his impact wrench to grind down the lug nuts and then pulls out a torque wrench and gives each nut a click at the appropriate torque. I about died laughing when I noticed this "specialist" initial the invoice where it read "Lugnuts checked for proper torque". After getting home the first thing I did was loosen the nuts and torqued them properly. It took my largest impact wrench to budge the nuts. They were probably at least 400ft/lbs. Caveat emptor.
