This has been posted here before, and written about in the press, but:

What prompted the extended "warranty" was the fact that providers of extended coverage in Europe refused to cover broken engines on a specific range of years and models. That put the ball back in the Saab/GM court. Owners had a valid warranty, and someone was going to pay.

Saab agreed to accomodate the insurance carriers and cover the cars. (Other car makers have similar problems, this is not just Saab) US car owners basically lucked out, and some will get new engines as a result.

There is no cutoff date for the problem, just for the cars lucky enough to be covered that would otherwise be out of warranty.

Oil deposits as a result of PCV issues coupled with short distance driving, cold weather, heat soak in the turbo or whatever else may be the cause can be found in Saabs (and not just Saabs) going back to 1997 at least, and my 96 may have a similar problem. Too many short trips, cold winters, etc. Changing conventional oil often did not do much to prevent it in my car, and I have owned it 8 years.

The issue for the rest of us is how to live with it, or how best to avoid it, so engine problems in older 900 and 9-3 models do not become as common as broken pulleys and failed DIC's. I am attempting to clean my engine with Auto-Rx because it is well beyond the stage where a quick flush or throwing synthetic oil at it will do much good. That will take months, IF it works at all.

Blaming Saab for a problem with a whole generation of cars from all manufacturers that use similar crank case emissions control systems is not going to do much for our cars either. It will just send another message that this is a worse model or make to own than other cars.
