Honestly, I didn't feel much difference between the 15s and 16s. The car definitely responds to steering input a little faster, but it's only a very little amount. On the other hand, there were no negative effects. I've heard that 17s can feel a bit harsh, but I like the ride on the 16s.
I'm hoping for a much bigger improvement from the steering clamp and brace, which I'm planning to do this spring. I was in a similar position to you, where I was buying new tires, and I got a set of wheels and tires used, so those were my first upgrade.
To me, the car goes plenty fast enough, so our priorities are a bit different. Still, I figured I wasn't going to be happy after making the suspension upgrades if I had to wait 2 years to get the wheels I wanted, so I splurged and spent the money.
