It's been described as an isomerization unit, which for a refinery means it takes straight chain paraffins like normal pentanes and reacts them to a branched form which has a higher octane rating.
As to the rated capacity of the refinery, I believe it's actually 460,000 barrels of crude per day. Of that, a third might end up as gasoline, as far as I remember from my days in the refining business. Still, I'd expect to see a nickel or more on the pump price as a result of this incident.
I work in a chemical plant not related to BP or the refining industry, and the mood is somber today. Our plants work so hard to be safe. We carry pictures of our families on our badges with the slogan "The reason I work safely." Though I don't know anyone at the BP refinery, it still has an emotional effect for whenever there's a bad accident.
My thoughts and prayers go to the victims and their families.
