Lower gears provide torque multiplication, they allow the car to accelerate. Higher gears provide resistance and therefore encourage clutch slip.
The test for a slipping clutch is in 4th or 5th gear at the torque peak. Find a big freeway hill or power brake. A slipping clutch won't make itself known in the lower gears.
You can also momentarily depress the clucth in a higher gear allowing the engine to rev and then snap the pedal up causing an abrupt engagement. A good clutch should grab the motor and not slip. If the clutch allows any rev mushiness, if it doesn't jerk the motor right down to the correct revs, the clutch is weak.
