PBR Brake Pads

I just installed PBR deluxe pads on the front of my 2001 9-3SE.
The pads came with the edges slightly beveled so that the entire surface of the pad will not come into contact with the rotor until it wears a bit.
I have never seen this before. Can someone tell me why?
