Couple weeks ago, my wife was driving a 2001 9-3 on a 5-lane highway. Suddently, a construction truck changed lanes without making any signal. The truck ran into the driver side of our 9-3. The 9-3 spinned around from the right to the left. Finally, the back of the car hit the median wall and stopped.
Everyone was surprised my wife was ok at that time (she got some muscle pain at the shoulder and back later). The doctor from the ER asked my wife what kind of car she drove. My wife said "A Saab". Then the doctor said "Oh, you should be ok. My sister-in-law also got a Saab too". She came home on the same day. If she were driving in a Japanese car, she probably stayed in the hospital for weeks.
Although there were only damages on the side and the rear, the insurance company decided to write off the car (may be there were some damages on the frame). We thought of getting a Japanese car as a replacement of the 9-3 a year later because many Japanese cars seem to have better interior and more horsepower. Now I think we will stay with Saab (We looked around to see if we can find another brand we like. We tried to decide whether to get another Saab or an Audi but my wife said she would feel more safe and comfortable in a Saab).
We are not ready to buy a new car yet so we bought a certified 2001 9-5 Aero (now we have to sell the 15" snow tires & wheels because the insurance would not take them). I didn't notice any turbo lag on this car, not even driving in the city. We just love it.
