I recently went through same brain-teaser your wrestling through. It's a personal decision, but I chose to skip it. A few reasons:
- the local & experienced Saab indie mechanic feels the 9-3s are solid cars, generally reliable to 100k+ miles.
- some pricey things that you will go (clutch, brakes) aren't covered anyway because they're wear items. Most other real pricey things like tranmission & engine internals are unlikely to fail pre-100k.
- as for the DIC, it's an item that can really leave you stranded with no warning. Sure it'd be covered under the warranty, but NOT if you buy it proactively & carry the spare in your trunk. AND let's not forget.....
- insurance companies are savy & profitable. They've done ALL the probably checks & know all the statistics. They're certainly not pricing the package in YOUR favor.
