The 93's with door speakers that I know of are in SE versions-- I have a 99 SE convertible and right now I'm upgrading the speakers. One of my door speakers (mid-woofers) went bad recently.
See this link:

And this is my take: The door speakers are mid-woofers only driven by a dedicated sub woofer amp. Its hard to find mid woofers that fix in the space-- 6 1/2" speaker (the easy part) --relatively shallow depth makes it hard to put a true woofer in there. I went w/ some good bass 6 1/2" Coaxial Kenwood Excelons and the tweeters will sit there and do nothing.
The door panels need to come completely off-- you can't just pop off the grills. See the audio guide link for more info. It's not easy to to this but not super hard either. You'll need a set of "star" headed bits since the screws aren't phillips. I will say SAAB put some good detail in their build quality.
The front dash speakers are a different story-- easy to upgrade. The grills pop off via a small slot on the edge and then one can carefully remove the grill. The SAAB drivers are coaxial but so-so in quality. They are 3.5" in diameter so there aren't a ton of after-market choices. Don't think about a larger diameter speaker-- it sounds tempting but it would be a PITA. I went w/ Infinity Kappa's one of the best speakers available, only $50 bucks on ebay. There are several decent brands out there e.g. JL Audio, Eclipse, Blaupunkt but most of them aren't as efficient and they don't offer an out board crossover ( a feature of the Kappas).
On the covertible, the rear speakers are full range whizzer cone-- definitly low tech. However, you can't pop the grill and replace them either. I looked at the work involved and decided its not worth it...The sedan's have a pretty easy replacement in the rear and I think they are 6x9".
Good luck!
