Ok, guys, I think I have it.
As many have posted here before, the original check valve for the rear windshield washer line (old-style 9-3) was a piece of junk and doesn't last. I bought my car at 42k, and the washer fluid trickled out in back, but it worked every time. Eventually, the trickle dried up. Sometimes, if I held the switch for about 30 seconds, I could get it to run again.
This morning, I replaced the check valve with one I got from McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com, part 7757K42, $2.90). The washer fluid now shoots right at my rear spoiler, almost entirely missing the window (yes, I'll re-aim it).
Here's what I think is going on: junk in the washer fluid eventually clogs that little check valve, making the flow to your rear windshield a weak trickle. Eventually, the valve gets stuck open (but still partly clogged) so that the line loses its prime. So, after a while of having weak flow, you get no flow unless you hold the button for a long time.
To fix it, get yourself a new check valve with 3/16" barbed ends. Remove the driver's side front corner light assembly. Reach back in there and find the line with the L-shaped black check valve. Pull off the hoses, and put in your new check valve. Make sure that the arrow on your new valve points from the hose that comes from the washer fluid reservoir, to the hose that goes into the engine compartment (and from there back to the rear windshield).
Little things make me happy, especially when big things aren't going so well (see my next post...)
