door lock assembly - HELP!!

This morning the key would not turn in the drivers side lock, necessitating entry from the passenger side. When I turned the key on this side, all lock buttons activated except for the driver side. The console lock button activates 3 doors as well. When I tried pulling the button up from the inside, it went back down. I locked the car and tried again. This time, I was able to turn the driver's side to the left (countercloskwise)!?!? Clearly it's broken, because it usually only opens when turned clockwise. I tried to open the passenger side, which now is nonfunctional as well. I had to go in through the hatch and push the seats down. The shop says that the door panel is almost impossible to removed with the door closed and that most likely I'll need an entire lock assembly. Has anyone had any experience with this and how much do you think I'm looking at in terms of repairs? Any chance I could do this myself with the door locked shut? Thanks.
