Service Theft Alarm issues

I have a '99 9-3. For many months, the "Service Theft Alarm" message has been displayed at startup. Last week the alarm stopped chirping when the doors were locked and unlocked.
This morning, I pulled out the alarm siren and soldered in some new batteries. I checked the connections and put it back in to find that nothing changed. Any other ideas? I read something about a possible ground issue that may cause this message too?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
