By profession I work in a metallography lab and have access to some pretty nice microscopes.... electron even. Would there be any benefit to doing some analysis on my piston(s)?
Typical work I'm used to seeing is trying locate and find microscopic cracks in metals(ironic yes), observe microstructure of metals/alloys, grain size, etc. I was trying to think of some benefits for the analysis. I could slice and polish the piston and then etch it to see the grain structure to find the heat effected zones. But would all this be useful.....???? Just looking for some helpful encouragement.
If I know the kind of metal it is I could then look at the grain size to find out how hot it was when it cracked. But again..is this useful info.
Any other suggestions? I would like to put together a cause effect scenerio and if it would be beneficial to look at the microstructure of the metal.
Thanks,
Kirk
