I'm with you on this issue. My '99 9-3 SE was a mess in the handling department when I bought it with 65K. I had wanted to move up to something newer than my '89 900T, and basically thought that a lot of the tramming, steering vibration, etc. was due to the Les Schwaub tires that were on the car, and would be fixed with a new set of tires. I should have checked this board more thoroughly first.
Now, about $2500 later, I'm getting closer to a car that should have been designed better to start with. Here's what I've done so far:
Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2's (balanced three times before they finally got it right, and scratched up my wheels nicely in the process)
6-point subframe brace
Poly bushings in control arms and front suspension
Alignment (twice)
front wheel bearing
New rotors and pads on all four
And it still has a tiny bit of vibration at 65-75, but it's a lot better on stability, tramming, and following every road irregularity, and I'm living with it. I just don't think I should have to. My tech says that I probably still face the dreaded drive axle replacement discussed on this board, because I still get shimmy in the steering wheel when I apply the brakes at higher speed, even though the rotors are perfect.
But you know what? I've discovered a two owner '90 900 SPG in mint condition with 85K on the clock, and I'm going to sell this piece of junk and go back to a car that delivers what I've been buying Saabs for since '82.
And I'm making this decision after trying out an '00 9-3 Viggen and an '01 9-5 Aero. Pronounced road noise and harsh ride quality in all these cars isn't acceptable to me (and yes I know that 900's are not very quiet either, but they don't command the prices of the 9-3 and 9-5) I just think they should have done a lot better job from the factory on the 9-3.
