Hi,
I have a 2001 9-3 base. Have been rather ginger with it. Always serviced at the dealers at the suggested frequencies. However, things went wrong with it all the while, some small, some alarming.
It has 33k miles on it, and the first 22k was driven almost solely on highway.
. At 20k, couldn't shift into 3rd gear, and synchronizer (?) was replaced.
. At 25k, the turbo failed, was replaced.
. At 30k, the sunroof developed a frog croaking noise, sunroof was replaced.
The small things that happened on it were,
. At ~20k, the plastic clip holding condenser to the body snapped.
. At ~25k, the driver side door knob spring snapped.
Now, my problem with it is a very elusive sunroof noise which developed about a month or two after the sunroof was replaced at 30k.
The noise sounds like a thin metal blade rattling against a think metal slab or glass, coming from the rear portion of the driver side of the sunroof.
It happened only under certain situations. I haven't found out the exact circumstances which will cause it to happen all the time. I made an appointment tomorrow, hoping that the rattle won't be shy of a service advisor. I would appreciate any pointers as to how I can coax the rattle to happen at a time when not only I am present.
The rattle almost always happen when the following three are met,
1. Outside temperature 50 - 60F,
2. Car has been parked overnight,
3. First 10 minutes of the drive.
My apartment is 15 minutes drive from the dealership, so praying that tomorrow the rattle would hang on until I get to the dealership.
And sometimes, the rattle would happen even when the car has been well warmed up. The one time I brought it to the dealership, it was really quiet with the service advisor sitting on the passenger seat, however, 2 minutes after we got out of the dealership, it rattled merrily all the way home.
The rattle does not happen when it rains.
Could it be the suspension is aggravating the problem? Since when I back off the car in the morning, there is usually a slight uneasy fidgeting noise coming from the right front wheel. And after some drive, the suspension gets into shape, cushions the car better, and the noise subsides?
Sorry for the long, less organized post. Many thanks!
