I had clunking in front end of 99/9-3 a year after changing struts myself. Discovered the cap that retains the strut at top of tube had loosened, letting the strut cartridge clunk around a bit. You can jack the front leaving the tire just in contact with floor to keep weight of suspension/wheel off the strut. Reach through the spring coils and lift the ribbed plastic boot. Check the strut retainer for tightness. I found that either a pipe wrench or slip-joint pliers worked to turn the threads. Actually, both sides had loosened up at different times. I unscrewed the cap about 1/2 way (careful--not all the way), cleaned the threads with solvent and applied blue thread lock before torquing down as hard as I could. It's been over 6 months since this treatment and no clunking since. Good luck.
