I'd pass, but how much is peace of mind worth?
I have a 2000 Viggen 5 door just about to turn over 89,000 miles.
I've have just owned it for 5 months, during which I put on the last 13,000, and during that time I've made no repairs whatsoever, just normal maintenance.
I have the warranty and service records for the car, and they showed a few body and trim adjustments, a couple of recalls, and brakes etc. The only thing of concern was some kind of transmission repair at 60,000. I can't tell from the dealer's printout whether it's just a linkage adjustment or something more major.
Oh, and it looks like the rims were replaced once on warranty.
A few things now need attention:
1. The driver's seatbelt doesn't retract properly.
2. The plastic trim around the driver's seat, the part that holds the seat adjustment switches, is cracked and needs to be replaced.
3. The black tape trim on the exterior door pillars is wrinkled, a common problem I can live with.
4. The paint on the hood is chipped due to 89,000 highway miles.
5. Of most concern, the transmission is quite stiff when removing it from 5th gear. I hade the shop check the linkage, and it seems ok. I guess at the 90,000 service I'll do the MTF upgrade and see if that helps.
All in all, I'd say the car has been quite reliable for the mileage, and I'd save my money on the warranty. But different people put a different value on peace of mind, and that's the main question to me.
Best regards,
Dave
