Today, my temp guage shot up suddenly after about a 10 minute drive. I stopped the car, shut off the enging (but left the ignition on so the cooling fan would continue running) and looked under the hood. All seemed normal, no coolant leak and the engine didn't seem too hot. The guage went back to the normal range in just a few minutes, so I shut the ignition off and went inside. When I went to drive back home, the same happened after only a couple minutes of driving, so I pulled off, but this time the coolant was boiling out of the reservoir. I waited about an hour, topped the reservoir off with water and drove it to a friends house a few blocks away, I'll have it towed Monday to the shop.
My first guess is that the water pump stopped working, or the thermostat is stuck, but I've heard so many head gasket stories regarding this year car that I'm a bit worried. Given these symtoms and the suddeness of the problem, what does this sound like to all of you?
