I have not done this, but I would be comfortable doing it. Certainly black on black would look good. I don't really like the chrome one, but I wouldn't want it lightening blue either. I have seen a black grill on a lightening blue viggen and it looked great. If you can detail the process you used that would be great -- I would guess you sanded down the chrome one -- do all the chrome bits come off?
Did you prime it? The real interesting thing will see how it withstands road debris. I added the mesh and painted it black and if something decent hits it the paint will chip a little despite sanding and priming.
Overall I think painting the grill is a good idea -- obviously Saab did too since from 2002 on up on the 9-5 they ditched the chrome grill for a body colored one-piece.
