Small pliers and a flathead screw driver...

were all I needed to separate the grill components, if I recall correctly. I used the pliers to work the tabs out of the slots on first the bottom and then the top, using the screwdriver to keep tension on the silver part to keep it from snapping back together. It certainly eases the process if you do it indoors after you've let your grill warm up to more bendable temperatures. It's simple, but does require some force to bend the tabs (no breakage here).
Needle-nose pliers helped to work the plastic bands in the center of the grill (where the SAAB logo is) open... the black plastic straps feed through square holes in the chrome part of the grill.
I'm still trying to figure a good way to install mesh in my lower intercooler opening, as I'm still prying June bugs out of there (and June was a long time ago).
