Engine kills when put into reverse

My fathers 9-3 convertible has a problem. When you shift it into reverse the engine will die. The engine stays running when you put it into 1-5th but with the clutch in as soon as you put it into reverse it dies. It must be an swith of some sort that it is hitting, any ideas?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Kris
