They can be painted but you have to do a alot little steps if you want the paint stick.
1. Remove the wheels from the car and have the local tire shop take the tires off the rims for you.
2. Clean and degrease the rims with some good solvents.
3. Wet sand the silver finish with various grades of sandpaper. I would start with 400 and work up to 800 or 1000 grit. You want to make sure you remove any left over gloss or clearcoat from the previous paint.
4. Give the rims a few good coats of Primer and let bake in the sun until dry.
5. Wet sand again with 1000G to remove any dust or roughness in the primers. BE CAREFUL. You don't want to sand too much, where you see through to the under layer. If you do accidentally, hit it with some more primer. The smoother the prime the better the top coat will look.
6. Apply several coats of your top color, waiting 10-15 minutes between coats. Let dry completely.
7. If necessary wet sand the top coat with 1200 or higher paper ever so litely to remove overspray.
8. Spray again several coats of High Gloss Clearcoat, and let dry.
9. Take back to tire shop and plead to them to carefully put the rubber back on the rims. TIP them if you have too.
10. After a month and the rims and new paint have totally cured you can use some buffing compound and hand polish if you want to.
11. Apply a light coat of wax to the rims. This will make the brake dust come off easier.
Now are you sure you want to go through all this?
I dit two years ago on my 944 and they still look like new.
Good Luck Jim
