Internet can be good AND bad at the same time.
Good because you find lots of information, bad because you find out that might pay too much for something.

You state in the beginning of your post that you are not that familiar with wrenching and might break something in the process so that leaves you in the hands of either a Saab dealer, Saab independant or a general repair shop.

Just because people on the internet say that this and that can be done for this and that much, doesn't mean that everyone HAVE to sell you the job for that price and you don't HAVE to go to the shop that charge more than the other.
Some people drive long distances and pay for repairs that they could have done for free under warranty just because they don't like the service at the dealer.
Others are blessed with great dealers where they fix everything correctly the first time.

Prices fluctuates and just recently the ignition cassette have gone up in price. So even if someone read about being able to buy a cassette for $290.00 6 month ago doesn't mean that you can buy it for that at this time.

The Saab retail price on the cassette is $437.00 and most likely you will not find any dealer selling it for less, but some charge more than list price.

Granted, the labor seems high but keep in mind that when it comes down to loading software they are using an expensive piece of equipment that needs to be updated several times a year for lots of money and the bottom line is that the tool needs to be paid for one or another way, that's just the way it is.

I was hauled up in a hospital once for 5 days and they charged me $1000.00 a day for the bed (not counting the doctor fees). Why would they do that since the hospital was already built and just sitting there. Couldn't they let me sleep in their bed for free or at least only charge me Motel 6 rates since I was just laying there.? I guess not.

And see it this way too, what they did now was to avert a possibly bad scenario by finding and repairing the problem before it left you stranded somewhere.

Usually the feeling is when you are stranded somewhere out in nowhere that you would gladly pay lots of money just to make the problem go away and you be on the road again. At least that's what I would feel.

Sorry for my rant but this topic comes up quite often and I just want to explain the other side of it.

Anders
