Both SIDs on my car, and a couple I saw on later 9-3 models I was test driving were failing the same way. Random pixels were missing. A couple 9-3 models had records showing the SID was already replaced under warranty.
If you look closely, you may be able to see that the missing pixels are not completely random, actually colums (or rows). Where a pixel is missing, a whole column will be blank. That can ONLY be caused by a bad connection or a bad driver chip, on a dot-matrix LCD the connections control rows and columns.
It would not surprise me if there were other failures, but the ribbon cable connections seem to be most of it. Nothing new in 10 years. I took mine apart, it's a well designed box with very, VERY cheap parts inside. Not worth buying new ones, IMO. Just get one from a junk yard or off e-bay for a hundred dollars. Likelihood of failure is the same.
To fix it right, the solder would have to be "re-flowed" using a hot air nozzle in a decent electronics lab. If you find a technician who repairs high-end audio, should take about 10 minutes with the right equipment.
