OEM Hands Free Phone in 99 Convertible?

I had a 2002 Vig Vert with OnStar and used the built in OnStar personal calling a couple of times using the pillar mount mic. It worked decent, although a little sketchy when the top is down and moving (guess you can expect that). But it wasn't too bad on wind noise because of its location. Never really tried it at highway speeds with or without windows up. When it was raining it was pretty bad because rain is noisy on the windshield with the pillar mount on the other end of the line.
So now I am thinking of wiring up the OEM kit in my '99 SE Vert. I like the idea of speakers with stereo volume, auto mute, and SID notifiction.
Does anyone have any experience good or bad with a using the built in kit? I love these benefits but am afraid that it would get nullified by the pillar mount mic.
I am figuring out if I should put this together or spend the money on getting a universal type bluetooth adapter and bluetooth headset. Of course, the headset needs some major wind noise reduction because now the mic is in the middle of the cabin (on my head).
TIA,
- Castro
