Isn't the alternator still under warranty on a 2002 model?
Very early for a bod Bosch alternator, usually they last 80-150k miles. I would suspect a corroded cable or a bad connection which does not allow the voltage at the battery to get high enough to charge.
If not, and since the car is fairly new, good chance you only need the voltage regulator assembly with the brushes. (about $73 at eEuroparts.com).
Remanufactured alternators are around $180-200 online or at chains ike AdvanceAuto.
The lowest labor quote I got was 1.1 hrs from the Tires Plus chain. 1.5-2 hrs labor is typical. Easy to replace if the car is on a lift, and a mechanic can work from below. Took me over four hours to do it myself from the top.
Dealers have been known to charge as much as $800, parts and labor.
