Gas gauge malfunction (lingish)

I filled the tank with about 1/2 half remainingg today due to a longish trip I'm making tomorrow. 99 9-3SE, no mods. With gas prices high, I chose to change from high octane, to mid range. After a couple of errand stops for up to about 15 minutes, I was driving home & suddenly the fuel gauge registers empty. No codes, chime or anything. All other gauges seemed to be working. I hit the brakes hard thinking maybe a fuel line was damaged & I was leaking fuel quickly. The gauge shot back up to full and DTE went from 0 back up to 680 (km).
Archives show a somewhat similar occurrence to someone, but he had run the tanks almost empty the day before.
Is there a ground wire I need to check a connection on? I hope nothing is capable of sparking in the fuel tank.
TIA
