If it is just the vapor line that has a leak. The pressure will not be that great. Your internal pipe/clamp method would work, as well as a few good wraps with duct tape. Varying methods may work longer or look better.
You could also get a 2" section of hose that has an inside diameter that matched the outside diameter of the worn hose. Glue and slip it over top of the worn area. They do sell special hose at the parts store that won't break down under pressure or chemical reaction.
