Other possibilities to check or rule-out...
1 - Oil dripping into compressor intake from crankcase vent. Take off the big rubber tube from air-cleaner to turbo. There's a steel tube (banjo fitting) on top of that down-turning aluminum elbow. Look inside the elbow, for evidence of oil dripping from here. Oil can collect in a low point after the turbo & occasionally some gets picked up, carried into the engine, & burned. Mine does that...
2 - I've heard where the engine is supposed to run fuel-rich for a second or 2 on cold startup. If so, I don't know why it doesn't do it EVERY TIME. Maybe it's a smoke/mirrors story from someone who doesn't really want to check turbo bearings...
3 - To actually see turbo seal leakage on the exhaust side you remove the exhaust. Not the easiest job with rust & age, but you have to look to be sure if that's it.
My occasional smoke smells sooty, not oily, so I'm actually leaning towards #2 along with #1. But that's for MY car, they don't all have to be caused by the same thing.
