Thanks for the license plate statement, I've been trying to figure out how to fit it on a license plate and yours is the best I've seen (or thought of). Anywho, it sounds like your drive bushings, in the transmission, might have worn. A couple questions. Do the driver seals leak? (where the drivers fit into the transmission on each side) and do you have a 5 spd? Genuinesaab.com has a service bulletin in the service information library in the transmission section. It's the first one- 94- Final drive oil leak. That bulletin states that there is only supposed to be .8mm of radial movement of the driver relative to the tranny! Before I replaced my drivers side final drive bushing last month it moved over an inch up and down and leaked of course. This was a very difficult job which I would not do again! The bushing seats in the diff. carrier and is between the outside seal and the differential splines inside the transmission.

And now for the bad news.. It is not designed to be replaced. There is a 1 piece metal circlip, located underneath the bushing, that holds it in place which I could not have known because not even the Saab factory blow-up parts software shows it. I didn't figure any of this out until I completely ruined the busing through the process of trying to pull it with a bushing puller. It took me about 3 days to figure out that the only way I was going to remove that damn bushing was to cut it in half. Which I did with a modified hacksaw blade. One thing I forgot, all that grinding and cutting required that I fashion a crude rubber "seal" that I put in the drive shaft hole to prevent all the metal shavings from falling in the transmission.

If this were to happen again I would have a machine shop weld up and then remachine the drivers to the new diameter of the worn bushings.

Please keep in mind that this is only relavent to my 99 9-3 5 speed, other years and automatics might be different.
