Talk about coincidence...
Yesterday on my double-ought Viggen I had a shop install Fujitsu Ten Eclipse integrated speakers in the dash (2-way) and rear (4-way), all while keeping the stock head unit. I listened to the results and thought "well, WAY better than stock, but needs more fill in the middle"; the back sounded fine and the front treble was fine but there was a definite lacking of midrange between the two...there was no "there" there. Fader to the back helped, but not enough. So I asked if putting in door speakers would help (and work with the stock head unit). He said sure, the head unit should be able to squeak by since these speakers are high-sensitivity (92-98 dB!) and I don't listen loud anyway. So I set up an appointment for the next day to install some 2-way mid-bass drivers.
Today I went to pick up the car today and cued up track 4 of Jewel's latest...BOOM ba-da BOOM ba-da BOOM ba-da BOOM. JFC I thought I was cruzing the hood with my homies the doors were literally rattling, this with the bass at zero gain. I was like "WTF where did this bass come from??!!" and the guy said "yeah, you got another amp in there, it's not from the head unit." At that point I realized that the previous owner must have installed the optional amp, even though the car came with no door speakers. Anyhoo, to keep my ears from bleeding I had to turn the bass ALL the way off...it was THAT bad.
After all this I came home and logged on to saabnet to post my experience, and as luck would have it found this thread on the first page. I followed another poster's recommendation and checked the LOUDNESS setting; sure enough, it was ON. So OFF it went, and it sounds MUCH better, MUCH more balanced; I can actually listen to it with bass at normal. I may still decrease the bass a bit for personal preference, but at least now my door panels won't be popped off by the backpressure. :-P
FWIW: Everyone here looooves and recommends Infinity's. Kappa this, Kappa that. I had them in my Z-car before, and had actually ordered front and rears for just this use. But, when I went in to have them installed, the guy said he -used- to carry Infinity but found they deteriorated (wore out, fell apart, stopped working) too quickly and he discontinued them. So I went with the Eclipse's.
FYI: my installer said he could install a new head unit / amp and -still- make the steering wheel controls work. Every post I've ever read here, people are afraid they'll lose the steering wheel controls if they go aftermarket. Perhaps it's worth the money to pay for professional installation. ;-)
