95 900SE A/C Hose question - are they hosing me?

Friends,
The A/C on my 95 900SE has quit working. As I live in the Valley of the Sun, this is quite vexing. Took it to Midas (everything they touch turns to crap) to have it recharged, and two days later it quit working again. When I took it back, they ran dye through the system, found and patched a leak, and recharged.
Two days later it quit working again, I took it back, and they told me on further inspection that one of the A/C hoses runs under the battery tray and had been corroded by battery acid in the past. They now want $450 to replace the damaged hose.
I did some research on the A/C system and found there are two main hoses (I think): high pressure and low pressure. I can get them online for about half the price the repair shop wants to charge. Here are my questions:
Which hose is the one they say is damaged: high or low pressure?
Can I replace the hose on my own, and if so, what is the procedure?
Do the people at Midas know what they are doing? Why did I have to take the car there three times to find this problem?
Thanks for the help.
Ben...
