I wanted to warn people of Saab of Greenwich's service practices. A little while ago, I posted about Saab of Greenwich CT telling me that the exhaust was bent on my wife's '00 SE convertible, well it turns out that the exhaust was not bent and they were trying to rip me off.

The service rep told me that the exhaust had been pushed forward and was bent in 3 places. This was causing the front catalytic converter to sit against the A/C line and the pipe to hit the floor causing the noise. He said he could charge me $187 to take the exhaust off and try and straighten it using a torch, but there was no guarantee that would work. The only other option he said was to replace the entire exhaust system which was not covered under warranty for $1000.

I declined and decided to put both of my 9-3's up on jack stands and measure and compare the exhaust systems. I found nowhere that the exhaust system was bent and nowhere that it was hitting the floor. The catalytic converter WAS sitting near the A/C line, but that was easily fixed by loosening the 3 bolts where the downpipe meets with the turbo and the two bolts on the mount below and sliding the exhaust back about 1/2 inch. However, that did not fix the clunking noise, and since the exhaust wasn't hitting the floor, I knew it had to be something else. I went into the trunk and low and behold, the nut holding the spare tire had come loose. I tightened it and the noise immediately went away.

I can’t believe that he could tell me with a straight face that my car needed $1000 worth of work when the problem was really a loose spare tire. My only explanation for his statements were that they were boldface lies.

I just wanted to let others to know to beware.
