'95 900SE 168K - replaced turbo at 130K a few years ago
I "did this myself" as the first real project I ever did on my car. In reality, I just helped out while a couple of friends did the work on it. They're engineers at GM that build race cars in their spare time and I had the good fortune that one of them was driving my car when the turbo blew a seal, so they took it on as a project.
Speaking from a non-technical point of view, be prepared to spend 8-10 hours in disassembly and assembly if you've never done this before. We had all the proper tools in the garage, but still ran into stripped bolts that we had to drill out, lines that didn't quite line up, flex pipes that didn't flex...and there is even a stud (on the far left) for mounting the manifold that broke off and was so inaccesible we just left it in there.
But with all that said, it is a very simple step-by-step process. We didn't use any manuals, but referred to saabnet posts a few times. As long as you remember the 23 steps it took to get the turbo out, you can just repeat those 23 to put it back in.
And one last bit of advice - don't forget to take the paper towel out of the downpipe before you put the turbo back together. Poof!
