Did the Short Belt modification as recommended by several postings and replaced the rear upper idler pulley . It was easy and it's working great. I used a Dayco 97 inch belt (2465mm). The markings on the tensioner pulley just about line up with each other. I notice however the clearance between the idler pully and the tensioner pulley is about one-third (.3) inch. This seems rather close. I did not take note of the clearance under the old belt configuration. Does anybody have thoughts on whether or not this is too close/tight? Should I be using a different size belt so that there is more clearance and room for the belt to stretch over time?
The following is not related to the question, but is a lengthy story how this whole thing started. Summer 2004 the wife was running errands on a very hot day. She came home and talking about heavy steering. The steering pump had dumped all it's fluid. I refilled the fluid and then the car acted fine, no leaks at all for eleven months. I atrributed this to the wife perhaps cranking too hard on the steering wheel while the car was sitting still. Fast foward to 2005. On the first hot day of the summer, it dumped all the fluid again. I put another quart in to limp the car home and it continued to dump fluid. However the next day after another refill, the steering pump didn't leak at all. All this sounded similar to a couple other postings about steering pumps that only leak on extremely hot conditions. Just about this point, it threw the serp belt. The grooves in the uppper rear idler pulley were in pretty rough shape, perhaps due to a combination of all the fluid and dirt. So the pump go replaced along with the pulley and short belt mod. BTW, when odering a new or remanufactured pump, make sure it comes with the pulley. Otherwise, you'll likely need a mechanic with the right tools to pull the pulley off the old pump and press it on the new pump.
