Accelerator pedal

I'm getting a "rough/grating" feeling when I modulate the gas pedal, which is seemingly getting harder to use. I believe I've narrowed it down to the pedal, or the cable end near the pedal(getting a creaking noise in the area when I depress the pedal).
The dealer in town says they don't stock either the pedal or cable-they don't get many hits for these parts.
I tried lubing the pedal and cable (removed the cover under the dash and performed a Houdini-like maneuver to get my torso and arm under the dash).
Anyone with experience with these buggers?
Would a manual help me? Chiltons?
