Hi,

This board has come through for me and saved me a lot of money in the past. So a big thanks to all of you. My new problem is this. I have a 98 900S with about 220K the car looks and runs great. I keep up on the maintenance but have developed a problem in the front end.

I was driving home from work today when I started hearing a sound similar to a “thud,thud,thud,thud” There is vibration coming from the wheel and the car seems to be handling the way I am used to it handling (I have put all the mileage on the car so I immediately pick up on things when they are out of whack). It does not seam to be pulling to any one side more than the other. When I accelerate the noise seems to dissipate then returns at a constant sound as I approach highway speed. As I decelerate the noise gets progressively louder but still there is no feedback to indicate a thrown wheel wheight or bent rim or even a bubble in the tire.

I did some slow speed test, put the car up on jacks and spun the tires looking for bubbles. I had the driver side control arm and ball joint replaced but never did anything to the passenger side. As I looked at the wear on the tiers I noticed that the inside of the tires on the passenger side are heavily worn. In one of my test I drove the car in neutral with the engine off to listen better. The sound seemed to be more of a rubbing sound. Anyway, I am stumped and wonder what some of you might think the problem may be and other things I should check. Could it be a control arm or bearing issue. It is definitely not related in any way to the engine or transmission.
