Are we getting paranoid about oil (even synthetic)?

After the engine oil sludge issues with the 9-5 and 9-3, it seems that some Saab owners are getting very conservative, if not down right paranoid, about oil life.
I have recently seen recommendations for using only synthetic oil in the Saab turbo engines (which I believe to be a valid and reasonable suggestion). That was followed by a recommended oil and filter change interval of 4,000-miles or 4 months. Another Saab owner recommended 3,000-miles or 3 month changes interval for full synthetic oil.
I am use to changing my oil (Mobil 1 0W-40) every 5,000-mile or once a year. In the past, my commute and driving habits had me racking up 5,000-miles every 5-6 months. Given a recent reduction in my job commute, it now takes me 10-12 months to get to 5,000-miles.
Am I being a foolish fellow for still following the 5,000-mile or once a year rule?
On the other hand, have Saab owners suddenly gotten sludge shy and are willing to waste good dollars (and oil) to ward off the specter of the sludge demon?
